the classics

28 Apr

the classicsAnd to piggy back on last weeks post which offered affordable trendy items to refresh your spring/summer 2014 wardrobe, investing in some seasonal classics is essential too.  These are the pieces to spend a little more money on since their shelf life is endless. They are the trends that move through a revolving door, reappearing year after year.  Every wardrobe needs a strong foundation, and these key basics will provide a sturdy baseline.  I’ve rounded up my list of ‘must-haves’ which I can assure you will go the distance.  Happy Monday!

Stay tuned for some exciting changes coming your way this Friday, which I cannot wait to share!  Your Soul Style is growing up!  Stay very, very VERY tuned!

spring ahead

23 Apr

spring aheadWhen a new season begins, I like to add newness into my wardrobe to keep things fresh.  And a key strategy is finding items that can easily transition, keeping their shelf life longer then three months.  Items that are “wear now”, can easily be paired down for the warmer months ahead.  What you wear today with boots can be switched out for sandals, and a jacket or cardigan can easily be removed when the temperature starts to climb.  It is all about layering, my friends!  H&M is an ideal destination to snag spring/summer 2014 trends like floral, chambray, crop tops, sheer and fringe because the longevity of these styles’ can be questionable.  The goal is to not break the bank on fast fashion choices.  I hopped on over and pulled together a few current pieces to get you started.  And keep in mind – you do NOT have to wait until memorial day to start wearing white.  Get on it…

metallic home pic

I have no idea where i am going in this outfit but I hope it’s somewhere fabulous, and hope that time is sometime soon.  I’ve been obsessed with it since the try on session and instagram snap over a month ago.  Spring is a buzzing here in NYC and as far as seasonal trends go, metallic is high up on the list of must-haves. Who says sparkle is just for the holiday season?  Rules are made to be broken, clearly.  The best part about this ensemble is not the mere fact that I was able to find a coordinated top and bottom in the coveted silver metallic color.  It’s that both of these pieces from H&M, together were $65!!!  I swear this may be the best investment I’ve ever made.  I appreciate a luxury item no less then the next person, but when finding exactly what I want for a steal – you can sign me right up, STAT!  The weather is warming here in NYC and this head-to-toe look is begging for a night out, along with other metallics I found on the interweb like this rose gold option from Topshop, an effortless high-low maxi dress from Alice & Olivia, this wear-with-everything cami by Parker, and this green (be still my heart) cropped, embroidered beaut from Zara.

utah & colorado: the essentials

21 Mar

telluride - utah packingTomorrow Dina and I leave for an adventure out west, first spending a few days in Moab, Utah and then heading on to Telluride, Colorado where we will meet up with friends for the week.  I’ve never been to either and like all travel, I’m super excited to explore another part of the world.  Coming off of the photography workshop I took last weekend (more on that later!), I look forward to all of the epic scenery nature has to offer.  Our time in Moab includes sleeping on a ranch, romantic dinners, hiking, and exploring the red rocks in the surrounding national parks.  While in Telluride, it’s about snowboarding/skiing, lodges, the spa, cozy dinners, quality time with friends and checking out the town.  Since the two legs of our trip are completely different in not only activity but temperature too, I was thoughtful when packing to ensure that most items in my suitcase would cross function.  Everything goes from day to night with just the switch of a shoe.  I didn’t want to overpack and needed to be strategic and efficient when deciding what to bring.  When going on a long trip, the best way to optimize space in your bag is by editing down items that can all work together.  Choosing a color story or sticking with a foundation of basics in black, grey or denim will allow for easy outfit making!  And when you’re on vacation and constantly on the go, getting dressed should be a no brainer.  Better to spend the time with your head up, taking notice to what’s going on around you!  With that said, here’s a snapshot of a few essentials, along with this fur vest, chambray shirt, silk cami and black blazer for layering.

I can’t wait to come back with so much goodness to share with you from the trip.  In the meantime, follow along on instagram since I will be posting along the journey as we go!

Have a fantastic weekend and week ahead!  xx jenny

overalls + fur

10 Mar

fur and overallsWhen I bought this pair of overalls last summer, I certainly did not think the trend would sustain.  After wearing them a few times I reckoned they’d be one of those items I’d feel guilty about buying because of such little wearability.  And although I’m becoming more strategic on where I spend my pennies, stumbling now and again does happen, naturally.  I imagined this would be another one of those instances.  But alas – the good ol’ fashion denim staple marches on.  I busted mine out again this past weekend when the temperature reached an exciting fifty degrees because like the weather, I am ready for change.  I paired them with my J.Crew keeper chambray shirt to facilitate a full-on denim suit also referred to sometimes as a Canadian tuxedo.  Figured to either go big or go home.  Overalls have been around since the late 1700’s, first worn for function in the workplace and then transforming into fashion by the 60’s and 70’s.  LeeLevi’s and Wrangler, are just a few of the early denim companies that monopolized on the silhouette.  Things have come full circle and despite the heritage brands reproducing old classics, you can now find modern, fresh updates everywhere like these from FRAME denimCitizens of HumanityCurrent/Elliot and a distressed version by H&M.  Go get yo-self a pair.  Happy Monday!  xx jenny

in the trenches

21 Feb

trench coat A forever fashion staple, trench coats have been around for eternity.  Which is why it’s a good idea to keep one on rotation in your closet since season after season, the classic silhouette proves to stand the test of time.  Whether your look is boho, edgy, polished, etc., a trench works well with any particular style and keeps you just the right amount of warm on cooler spring days.  The interweb is bursting with newness from low to high price points so now is the time to get on it!  Here’s an edit of some current faves for your shopping pleasure.  Happiest, happy weekend!  See you on the flip side.  xx jenny

walking on the wild side

17 Feb

649765_mainIt’s not uncommon to find a clothing item you love, but veto purchasing it because you’re stumped on what to wear it with.  We tend to get stuck inside our style boxes, making it impossible to envision anything outside of them.  And then we wind up wearing the black version, envious of the person who had the courage to take a chance on the leopard print.  Playing it safe can land you in a fashion funk, wondering why there is no excitement in your wardrobe.  And most of the time, the riskier version works just as well as the basic.  I recommend adding a few less predictable items to your closet for days when you want to embrace your daring side.  This River Island sweatshirt can be found in solid colors anywhere and it’d probably get way more mileage if you went that route, but today why not give the animal print a-go. Sometimes we all need to take a walk on the wild side.  Happy Monday!  xx

Have an item that you’re confused on how to wear?  Send it my way at yoursoulstyle@gmail.com so I can feature a style post that will help you out!

sexy sweats

4 Feb

sexy sweats 2I put this photo on instagram over the weekend and after a friend commented that she “must own these pants”, along with another chiming in, “agreed”, I decided to put together a post.  Sweatpants are now a staple in my wardrobe since traditional silhouettes have evolved to slimmer and more fashion-forward fits.  While I understand that weekend days are a time to kick back, there is no reason why you can’t be comfortable and still look good!  The ones I’m wearing are H&M from last season with limited sizes left, but here’s a few current styles that will surely do the trick.

splurge vs. steal: denim

31 Jan

spring denimI have been gushing about GAP boyfriend jeans for a while now, like we discussed here.  Needless to say, I have literally not taken them off my body ALL WINTER LONG!  It’s just too easy to grab them from my closet chair in the morning when one eye is half open and I need to throw together a comfortable and easygoing ensemble.  With spring close by (thank god!), I’m looking for my next go-to pair and after perusing the likes of net-a-porter and shopbop where designer styles average around $200, landed myself right back at GAP coveting these at $69.95 each.  In case you need help with the math here, that’s basically three pairs for the price of one!  For real.  Mega steal, no?  These will definitely become closet staples in my spring wardrobe so don’t be surprised when you spot me here wearing all three as such…

Happy shopping & weekend! xx jenny

cling to kling

16 Jan

elin klingNO MATTER WHAT Elin Kling is wearing I fall in love with, which is why ever since I spotted the above image of her in these impossible to find Spring ’13 Celine mules, I’ve been searching high and low for my own, more affordable version.  This silhouette continues to trend for Spring ’14 and although reminiscent of the early 90’s, fashion is always repeating itself.  That’s right ladies, mules are back and what from what it looks like, here to stay!  I’m sure I had a similar style in high school, which totally validates my perpetual reasoning for never throwing anything away.  So what if my closet is overflowing with stuff I haven’t worn in twenty years – I will one day again!  This proves it!  Maybe you’ve got an old pair buried in your childhood home, but in case you’ve tossed like me, here are a few current options to consider…
